ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
The primal story of Reinaert de Vos comes to life in this multimedia music theater production. The puppeteers and dancers of Duda Paiva Company, musicians of the New European Ensemble and singers of Holland Opera spoil the eyes and ears in this performance for the whole family.
Queen Nobel holds court day. All the animals complain about Reinaert de Vos’ malicious pranks. Bruun de Beer and Tibeert de Kater are sent out one after the other to summon him, but Reinaert pays them back. Only when his daughter Rosseline insists does Reinaert appear at court. Everything is against him and he is sentenced to death… However, the cunning Reinaert manages to convince Queen Nobel of his innocence with a sublime story, casually sacrificing his daughter. If he also mentions a treasure, the queen tacks.
The satirical animal story is translated into a climate court case in which the ‘equals’ are tempted to corruption, in which the youth rise up against the old guard and in which Reinaert’s daughter ultimately triumphs.
The ancient story was specially adapted for this performance by writer and poet Simon van der Geest, who twice received a Gouden Griffel for his children’s books: Dissus and Spinder. Oene van Geel (winner VPRO/Boy Edgar Prize 2013) makes a versatile musical composition, in which each player gets his own musical idiom. For example, Queen Nobel sings in gospel style; Reinaert sings in modern classical style and his daughter Rosseline sings in pop style.
