The zarzuela, related to the French opéra-comique and the German Singspiel , constitutes the lyrical genre par excellence in the Hispanic world. During the rise of zarzuela in the 19th century, the identity traits that differentiated it from the Italian opera seria, with which it shared fame and scene, were praised by audiences and creators alike. The existence of spoken parts and their dramaturgical quality, however, blur a basic connection between both genres: the melodic essence. This concert, which closes the 2022-2023 season, offers a sample of diverse fragments, from Spanish and Italian songs to opera arias and zarzuela romances: thus celebrating the bel canto connection between these Mediterranean vocal traditions.
