ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
Sung in French, the text takes up the liturgical text of Psalm 47. The beginning of the work (“Glory to the Lord”) is shattering between the bursts of the orchestra, the choir and the brass bands (one thinks of the “Tuba mirum” from Berlioz’s Requiem, an assumed heritage according to some of Schmitt’s biographers). There follows a still calm development, then a less lively but still animated passage. Then comes the calm of an orchestral melody, then giving way to the soprano soloist (“The beauty of Jacob”) prepared by a violin solo.
Ample song with a wide range, accompanied by airy voices from the choir in a widening movement. After an organ transition, the third section (“God is ascended”) begins with a simple choral melody, eight bars in one harmony, eight bars in another harmony, which does not lack effect. The last moments give way to a frenetic dance to the rhythm in 5/4, to finally resume in conclusion the initial texture of the work.
