Encouraging environmental awareness in operatic creation
Opera is one of the most precious assets of European cultural history and the only heritage that has united audiences across Europe while preserving its linguistic diversity. Born of the allegorical celebrations and pomp of 17th-century European courts, environmental sustainability was not a priority for a performing art genre that even went so far as to build entire theaters for a single performance. Since then, opera houses around the world have transformed themselves into modern machines with advanced technologies, combining beauty, efficiency, and tradition. Today, they are taking the next step to become increasingly environmentally sustainable and, in some cases, to instill in audiences the awareness needed to live well and save our planet.

Co-funded by the European Commission under the Creative Europe programme, Butterfly: Boosting environmental awareness in opera creation aims to foster a new attitude towards sustainability by exploring new environmental practices related to the production and dissemination of opera. To do this, the project retraces, on a European scale, every stage of opera production, aiming to experiment with sustainable practices at every stage —from commissioning to audience participation. Engaging young people and schools is a key focus of the project.
