ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
The Poem of Love and the Sea op. 19 is a composition for voice and orchestra by Ernest Chausson , written between 1882 and 1892. Dedicated to Henri Duparc , it constitutes, with the Chanson perpétuelle , the musician’s major work for voice and orchestra.
The texts are taken from Poems of Love and the Sea , a collection published in 1876 by Maurice Bouchor , a friend of the composer . 1 The gestation of Poem of Love and the Sea , particularly long (nearly ten years), ended on June 13, 1892.
The work consists of two parts separated by a short orchestral interlude . Chausson later published separately, under the title Le Temps des lilas , the last four stanzas of the second part.
The first hearing took place on February 21, 1893in Brussels by the tenor Désiré Demest, with the composer at the piano . The version with orchestra was given in Paris onApril 8of the same year by the orchestra of the National Music Society under the direction of Gabriel Marie , with Éléonore Blanc, soprano , as soloist .
The performance of the work lasts a little less than thirty minutes.
