  • ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE

The evening began with the Orchestra’s performance of “The Dance of the Hours” from the opera “La Gioconda,” one of Amilcare Ponchielli’s most renowned works. The headliner then appeared on stage for the first time to a standing ovation from the audience. “Nemico della patria” was the first piece performed by Plácido Domingo .

Ainhoa Arteta continued singing “L’amour est un oiseau rebelle ,” also popularly known as “Habanera,” from the opera Carmen. At the end of the performance, Plácido Domingo began singing “Pietà, rispetto, amore” from Giuseppe Verdi’s opera “Macbeth.”

Those in attendance expressed respect and love for one of Spain’s most internationally renowned tenors. At 81 years old and with more than five decades of experience, Plácido Domingo continues to give his all on stage as if it were his first day, as if he still had something to prove.

It was then the turn of the tenor performing at home: Jerez native Ismael Jordi . He made his debut that evening with “Pourquoi me reveiller .” Once the three voices had delighted the assembled audience solo, the duets began. The first was Domingo’s with Jordi, who performed “Au fond du temple saint” together.

The evening was very special for everyone in attendance, but it must have been particularly emotional for Ismael Jordi. The tenor was singing in his hometown and on the same stage as Plácido Domingo and Ainhoa Arteta. Furthermore, he was leaving his mark on Bodega Las Copas, wowing the audience with his majestic voice and performance.

Following the Málaga Symphony Orchestra ‘s performance of “Trisch Tratsch Polka” , Domingo and Arteta continued with a joint performance of “Calle el labio” , before the orchestra returned to play “Danza española” by the Cadiz-born Manuel de Falla.

“Fight with faith for victory ,” sang Plácido Domingo, followed by “El Chotis de Eliseo ,” sung by the beautiful voice of Ainhoa Arteta. Then came the third duet of the show, with the tenor and soprano performing “En mi tierra extremeña . ”

The performance continued with the romance “Por el humo se sabe” from the zarzuela “Doña Francisquita,” performed by the Jerez-born tenor. “Canción de paloma ,” sung by Arteta, and “Feliz morada ,” a duet by Domingo and Jordi, were the prelude to one of the evening’s highlights—one of many throughout the two-hour performance.

It was now the turn of Spanish classical guitarist Pablo Sáinz-Villegas , who performed “Libertango” and “Tico-Tico” with the Málaga Symphony Orchestra . It was a fabulous and exciting combination that received a standing ovation.

With “Did You Call Me, Rafaeliyo?” from “El Gato Montés,” Arteta and Domingo played Soleá and Rafael, respectively, to close the program. However, the night wasn’t over. The encores offered unique moments.

Plácido Domingo sang “La morena de mi copla” and was followed by Ainhoa Arteta who, along with Sáinz-Villegas on guitar, whispered in a very intimate and sweet way “Alfonsina y el mar” (Alfonsina and the sea) . She dedicated this song by Mercedes Sosa to Plácido Domingo, “to all those who are not well” and, especially, to the health workers: “They are always there to save the most precious thing we have, life,” said the soprano, moved.

“Bella enamorada” -from the zarzuela “El Último Romántico” and performed by Ismael Jordi- Jerez was left with this “night of love, mysterious night” and night of musical excellence.

The Madrid-born tenor sang “Granadinas” accompanied by Pablo Sáinz-Villegas on guitar. The Logroño native demonstrated his virtuoso mastery of the instrument with his almost unimaginable strumming and picking.

The icing on the cake came with the two tenors and the soprano performing Luis Miguel’s song “Bésame Mucho” together , accompanied by some very lively tones from the orchestra. It was a stroke of genius, or as they say around here, ” a real piece of nonsense” to cap off a magnificent evening.
