The St. Petersburg State Rimsky-Korsakov Conservatory presents the opera The Queen of Spades by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky on the stage of the Music Hall Theatre. The most “Petersburg” and the most “symphonic” opera based on Pushkin’s exciting story was written in record time – in 44 days! The author of the libretto is the composer’s brother, Modest Tchaikovsky. “Either I am terribly mistaken, or The Queen of Spades is, in fact, a masterpiece…,” wrote Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky to Grand Duke Konstantin Konstantinovich. And Tchaikovsky was not mistaken! Performed on December 19, 1890 at the Mariinsky Theatre, the opera was a dizzying success, keeping it to this day. Dynamics of action, gradually unwinding narrative spring, signs and symbols, excitement and passion, mysticism and reality – all this met in the masterpiece of two Russian geniuses. Imbued with the magical energy of the opera, I want to walk again along the route of the heroes of Pushkin and Tchaikovsky, stand at the house of the Countess on Malaya Morskaya, look into the Summer Garden and be reflected in the Winter Canal … The Queen of Spades entered the top of the world opera repertoire, enjoying constant success with the public, and attracting the attention of numerous directors – the creators of the most unexpected versions. One of them was embodied in the long-awaited premiere of the St. Petersburg Conservatory. The project involves a choir, a symphony orchestra and the best students of the solo singing department of the St. Petersburg Conservatory. Musical Director and Conductor – Rector of the Conservatory, Honored Artist of the Russian Federation Alexei Vasiliev. The director is an outstanding master of the world musical theater, head of the department of opera training, honored art worker – Alexei Stepanyuk.
