ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
The story of Odysseus has been interpreted in all arts for centuries. Due to the battle for Troy and his subsequent odyssey, he did not return home for twenty years. His wife Penelope is waiting for him there, not knowing when and if he will come back. Like many women in real and mythological history, however, Penelope usually only appears as a secondary character in a heroic story. She is always described as waiting, weaving to while away the time and ward off suitors. But is it possible to fill a whole twenty years? And how did Penelope fare during this time?
In her final production, Maike Schuster will sharpen the female perspective on the well-known material. In addition, Penelope becomes the main character, sung and performed by none other than the Hamburger Kammersängerin Gabriele Rossmanith. The roles of the five youths or suitors are taken over by singers, an acrobat and an actor. Nine string players as well as players for harpsichord, piano, harp and percussion ensure the musical implementation. The basis are the settings by Claudio Monteverdi and Gabriel Fauré, which are surprisingly contextualized by newly composed and specially arranged pieces and underline the fresh focus.
