  Welcome to the world of Christmas Theater. Our translator, distinguished musicologist, and literary advisor, Dr. Joseph R. Jones, has spoken for years of his certainty that the carols of the Spanish Father Antonio Soler would have been dramatized by the children of the choir school at the Monastery of San Lorenzo, El Escorial, in the hills near Madrid. Three years ago, I mentioned the idea of ​​such an event to Jendi Tarde, who has sung with ONS for many years. Little did I know how quickly the ideas tossed out in conversation would develop in such a creative mind to produce the exciting and delightful Shepherds Play.

  Immediately after that premiere, we met to discuss a revival this year. Tonight you will see that unique concept recreated and further enriched with elements of the Baroque New World in the Pastorela. We tip our hats to Jendi for this brilliantly researched, scriptural, albeit comical, version of the ancient Mexican tale of the shepherds, as you will see it tonight.

  STAGE DIRECTOR’S COMMENTS
  When Grover Wilkins asked me to direct and develop a new theatrical production based on the Pastorela, I was somewhat cautious. I love Latin American Baroque music, but I wasn’t familiar with this theatrical tradition. For me, the most important thing was to show cultural respect and for our work to come from a place of love for Christ and the miracle of his Incarnation.
  Our story begins in the 18th-century Spanish court, where a troupe of performers presents their version of the Pastorela to the king. They portray all the characters that devotees of this art form would recognize: shepherds, hermits, archangels, and, of course, the Devil. It is the story of ordinary people, like you and me, who encounter a true epiphany, told with laughter, passion, and wonder
