Oskar Hillebrandt was born in 1943 in Schopfheim, Baden-Württemberg. After successfully completing his apprenticeship as a goldsmith in Recklinghausen, he served in the German army. From the age of 14 he took singing lessons at the Gelsenkirchen Conservatory. In 1965 he was selected from 69 applicants for the Bayreuth Youth Festival meeting in the Margravial Opera House in Bayreuth. He completed his singing studies at the State University of Music in Cologne with Professor Josef Metternich.
