ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
The opera “Orgy” was written based on the dramatic poem of the same name by Lesya Ukrainka in 1993. February 25 marks the 150th anniversary of the birth of Lesya Ukrainka, so the performance will be one of the many artistic events until that date.
Lesya Ukrainy’s “Orgy” is quite a challenge for the composer. The action of the poem takes place during the occupation of Ancient Greece (“Hellas”) by the Roman Empire, but this plot is relevant both for the time of its writing (1913) and for our time and involuntarily evokes parallels with the enslavement of Ukraine by the Russian (and later – Soviet) Empire . Before the artist – a representative of the enslaved people, the question inevitably arises – to flatter the ears of the occupier for the sake of fame and money, or to live his whole life in poverty and obscurity? ” Now in Hellas, only the one who is praised by Rome has glory” – this is how the main character of the poem describes the situation, ultimately giving priority to the possibility of creative self-realization.
