ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
Pierre de Jéliote was Jean-Philippe Rameau’s favorite singer; he is said to have reached the double-barred C effortlessly. Reinoud Van Mechelen, celebrated Belgian tenor of our time, follows in Jéliote’s footsteps with his Ensemble a nocte temporis.
For more than 30 years, Pierre de Jéliote was the leading haute-contre (high tenor) at the Opéra de Paris. He played more than 150 games and Rameau wrote numerous roles for him. A selection of Rameau’s arias for haute-contre will be performed by Reinoud Van Mechelen, who, as a sought-after singer in the field of historically informed music, has worked with conductors such as William Christie and Philippe Herreweghe. He comes to Cologne with his own small and fine ensemble a nocte temporis.
Music by Jean-Philippe Rameau, Charles-Louis Mion, Antoine Dauvergne, Pierre-Montan Berton and others
