  • ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE

The opera “Ollanta,” composed by the Peruvian musician José María Valle-Riestra and originally premiered in 1900. It is a lyrical adaptation of the colonial Quechua drama Ollantay, considered one of the most important works of musical nationalism in Peru.

    Synopsis of the Work

The plot faithfully follows the core of the classic drama, focusing on the conflict between love and the laws of the Inca Empire:

Forbidden Love: General Ollanta, a brave commoner, falls in love with Cusi Coyllur (Joyful Star), daughter of the Inca Pachacuti. Due to the rigid social hierarchy, their union is impossible.

The Rebellion: After being rejected and humiliated by the Inca when he asks for his daughter’s hand in marriage, Ollanta rebels against the empire and takes refuge in the fortress of Ollantaytambo, beginning a war that lasts for years.

The Punishment: As a consequence of her illicit love affair, Cusi Coyllur is imprisoned in the Acllahuasi (the House of the Chosen Women), where she secretly gives birth to a daughter named Ima Súmac.

The Resolution: Years later, after the death of Pachacútec, his son Túpac Yupanqui assumes power. After capturing Ollanta through a stratagem by General Rumi Ñahui, the new Inca shows mercy. Upon discovering his sister Cusi Coyllur imprisoned, Túpac Yupanqui pardons Ollanta and finally allows the couple to be together.

    Importance of Valle-Riestra’s Version
Premiere: It premiered at the Teatro Olimpo in Lima in December 1900 and had a significant revival in 1920 with government support.

Style: Although it uses a European musical structure (verismo style), it incorporates Andean motifs and traditional songs such as the yaraví, seeking to reclaim the Inca past from academic music
