Machete is a type of guitar, larger than the cavaquinho and smaller than the viola.
It is also the title of a short story by Machado de Assis, which tells a love story between young people that brings a reflection on the erudite and the popular.
“The tale of Machado de Assis is very musical”, says Mehmari. “He was a genius at translating into literature the artistic and social moment in Brazil at that moment, at the turn of the century, from the 19th to the 20th, in Rio de Janeiro. And, of course, he was aware of what was happening in the music as well. Machado de Assis traces a narrative around Inácio, a cellist, whose life is marked by the passage of a machete player. This crossing of musical information, from the sublime and lyrical European cello to the popular and powerful machete is reflected in the music of composers such as Ernesto Nazareh, Anacleto de Medeiros, Chiquinha Gonzaga, among many other creators.”
