Martins Pena (Luis Carlos Martins Pena) was born in Rio de Janeiro in 1815. He was a playwright, diplomat and introducer of comedy of manners in Brazil, having been considered the Brazilian Molière. His work describes, with irony and humor, the graces and misfortunes of Brazilian society, especially Rio society, and its institutions. At the age of 23, he premiered his first play, O Juiz de Paz na Roça. He passed away at the age of 33, in Lisbon, leaving a legacy of more than 30 theatrical plays.
The comedy O Caixeiro da Taverna is one of those fun stories portraying typical characters who passed through the city of Rio de Janeiro in the mid-19th century. And like any good comedy of manners, it is full of confusion, setups, unusual situations and twists.
The conductor and professor at UniRio (State University of Rio de Janeiro), Guilherme Bernstein, saw in Caixeiro an excellent theme for a short and fun opera that, in addition to publicizing the dramaturgy of Martins Pena and his time, would serve as an excellent gateway to entry into the opera for the lay public, as it is a Brazilian theme and sung in Portuguese, and with a composition that moves between classic and contemporary.
SYNOPSIS:
In this comedy, the Portuguese Manoel is the manager of a tavern that belongs to the widow Angélica. Manoel is tired of being just a servant and believes he has the potential to be Angélica’s partner. Angélica wants Manoel not just as a partner, but as a husband. It turns out that Manoel is already secretly married to the young seamstress Deolinda. Not even Deolinda’s brother, the military man Quintino, knows about this marriage. Manoel’s friend, Francisco, is also interested in Angélica, but she has no eyes for him. These elements are a full plate for lies, confusion, misunderstandings and an unusual ending.
In the role of Manoel, we have the great bass-baritone from Rio, Lício Bruno. Lício studied at the Franz Liszt Academy, Budapest, was a member of the Hungarian State Opera, and sang in Italy, Spain, Germany, Switzerland, Colombia and Argentina. They have more than 50 characters in their repertoire in operas by different authors, periods and styles. Lício is, to this day in the history of Brazilian opera, the only singer to have completely faced Wotan/Wanderer from the Wagnerian Tetralogy. It was directed by icons of Brazilian Theater – Amir Haddad, José Possi Netto, Jorge Takla, Gianni Rato, Sérgio Britto – and foreign – Werner Herzog, Hugo de Anna, Aidan Lang, and sang with renowned Brazilian and foreign maestros, including Lorin Maazel and Isaac Karabtchevsky.
