ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
Historical opera about the life of the poet Nizami Ganjavi, written in 1939 by composer Afrasiyab Badalbeyli. The music and libretto of the opera were written by Afrasiyab Badalbeyli based on the plot and motives of Mammad Said Ordubadi’s novel “Sword and Pen”. The opera premiered on December 12, 1948 at the Azerbaijan State Opera and Ballet Theater.
The work consists of 5 scenes and 6 pictures. The multi-act nature of the opera, the large number of participants and the mass scenes with the choir, the luxurious scenes in the palace are somewhat reminiscent of the European opera genre. In the work, Nizami Ganjavi, who is interested in the fate of the city, and people who are close to him morally, fight against those who pursue their own interests and greed for power. The poet is presented as a noble person who loves his people and his hometown.
