  In Venice, the Church of the Pietà adjoins the Ospedale della Pietà. Founded in the 14th century, this establishment had the function of welcoming orphans and abandoned children of the Serenissima, including many illegitimate children of the Venetian nobility and bourgeoisie. A hospice but also a music conservatory, the Ospedale della Pietà counted Antonio Vivaldi among its illustrious teachers. As maestro dei concerti of the Pietà, Vivaldi composed numerous liturgical and paraliturgical works while teaching music to orphan girls most gifted in singing. It is in this context that the musician gave birth to his famous Nisi Dominus.

  If this concert was built around this masterpiece of sacred music, Vincent Dumestre also gives us to hear two other compositions from “Prête roux” as well as works by Serafino Razzi and Francisco Soto De Langa. The whole unfolds throughout a program full of fervor and celestial beauty.
