  • ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE

The Nine German Arias ( HWV 202–210) are a work by the Baroque composer George Frideric Handel ( 1685–1759 ) from the years 1724–1727 . Nine seemingly simple da capo arias for a solo voice, an accompanying melody instrument, and basso continuo follow one another:

    1. Vain sorrow of future times
    2. The shimmering gleam of the playing waves
    3. Sweet Flower Ambergris Flakes
    4. Sweet silence
    5. Sing, O soul, to the praise of God
    6. My soul hears in seeing
    7. You who dig up vain Mammon from dark tombs
    8. In the pleasant bushes
    9. Flaming Rose, Ornament of the Earth
The titles themselves reveal that Handel – famous as the creator of magnificent operas and oratorios – is here venturing into the realm of more intimate recitation and into the world of the mindset of early Pietism .

By 1727, Handel had already been living in London for sixteen years , where he had primarily distinguished himself as a composer of celebrated Italian operas in the heroic genre and pompous occasional music . From 1703 to 1706 (before his acquaintance with Italy ), he had lived and composed in Hamburg .

Handel adopted the quiet, sensitive texts from the Hamburg poet Barthold Heinrich Brockes. These texts were neither in Italian nor, like Handel’s later oratorios, in English , but in his native language . They came from Brockes’s collection of poems, “Irdisches Vergnügen in Gott” (Earthly Pleasure in God ), published in 1721. Handel understood how to express their tender, unassuming, and unpretentious mood in music with the same mastery he displayed in the raging passions or virtuosic sentimentality of his other works.

Both the texts and Handel’s musical setting are characteristically situated at the transition from the Baroque period in the narrower sense to the Age of Enlightenment , or rather its first phase, the Age of Sensibility : Humanity discovers the trace of God in the serene beauty of nature and thanks the Creator with praise and glory, sometimes cheerfully, sometimes deeply contemplatively. The contented, tranquil tone of the mood is due in equal measure to its roots in a bourgeois, governmentally governed milieu and to the contemporary idea of the best of all possible worlds .

All this leaves room for rather modest embellishments of the vocal line, and even then only in the A’ section of the A-B-A’ form. The unusual Nine German Arias were to remain isolated in Handel’s oeuvre even after 1727; the composer soon turned again to larger, more crowd-pleasing forms.
