ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
The Nano-Opera Competition has been in existence since 2013 and has become a cultural event of European significance, a magnet for outstanding theatre professionals and talented young people. The professional jury includes artistic directors and directors of leading international and Russian opera houses, renowned theater managers, and producers, giving Nano-Opera participants the opportunity to secure first-hand engagements. The competition’s Grand Prix is a production at the Helikon Opera Theater.
The competition takes place at the Helikon Opera Theater, one of the most modern theater venues in the world, built by Moscow.
The competition’s conditions are designed to closely mirror the modern production process. Participants work with Helikon Opera artists to stage an aria (Round 1), a duet (Round 2), and a crowd scene (Round 3). Stage miniatures are born from scratch before the audience’s eyes.

On May 24, the final gala concert of the VI International Competition for Young Opera Directors “Nano-Opera” took place on the stage of the Stravinsky Hall, and we learned the names of the winners!
Concert hosts Alexey Frandetti and Ksenia Lisanskaya kept the suspense going until the very end, as the Helikon Opera Theatre’s artists performed their best competition numbers, created by young directors.
First place was awarded to Ekaterina Berez (Russia, Moscow), second place to Leonid Lavrovsky (Russia, Moscow), and third place to Fyodor Shalagin (Russia, Moscow) and Konstantin Kamynin (Russia, Moscow). The prize was presented to Ekaterina Berez by the renowned Italian opera director Giancarlo del Monaco, son of the great tenor Mario del Monaco.
The special prize from the media jury (a Parker pen from the Moscow bookstore and an interview on the TASS news agency website) was awarded to Ekaterina Berez.
As per tradition, members of the media jury also presented their awards:
Ekaterina Berez received an interview prize from the critical and journalistic magazine “Musical Life,” a certificate for staging one of the programs in the “Bolshaya Opera” competition from the Russia-Culture TV channel in the new season, a prize of participation in the “Tavor in Major” program from Radio Orpheus, and a certificate for 100,000 rubles for advertising promotion on the VKontakte network;
Fyodor Shalagin received an interview prize “For a bold look at a world hit” from the portal “Revizor.ru”, and a prize “For an attentive and sensitive attitude to the musical component of the performance” – participation in the program “Tavor in Major” from “Radio Orpheus”;
Leonid Lavrovsky received an interview prize for “Best Provocation in Nano-Opera” from the Moskovsky Komsomolets newspaper, and an interview prize from the Rossiyskaya Gazeta newspaper;
Konstantin Kamynin received the “Interview” prize from the “Your Leisure” portal;
Tatyana Stolbovskaya received an interview prize from the Nezavisimaya Gazeta newspaper;
Andrey Steshets received an interview prize “For Opposing Traditions” from the ClassicalMusicNews.ru portal, and an on-air interview “For a Creative Approach, Innovative Solutions, and Delicate Work with Artists” from Radio Russia.
We thank the magnificent soloists, the brilliant choir, and all the Helikon Opera services who supported the participants throughout the competition! We thank the jury, headed by Dmitry Bertman, and the media jury! Special thanks go to our media partner, the Rossiya-Kultura TV channel, whose wonderful staff was with us throughout these days to organize the broadcasts of the Nano-Opera tours! Our beloved viewers watched the directors’ battles with excitement and interest and chose their winners – Konstantin Kamynin and Fyodor Shalagin.
