Rabbi Löw saves the life of Emperor Rudolf II during a visit to the Jewish city of Prague by turning a stone into a pair of pigeons that had been thrown on the emperor by an assassin. In doing so, however, he has disturbed the equilibrium of the world. The consequences are serious. Because that day Rudolf sees the beautiful Esther and falls in love. After searching in vain for the girl, Rudolf blackmailed Rabbi Löw: if this beautiful girl were not brought to the castle, he would persecute and drive out the entire Jewish community. Rabbi Löw refuses to extradite Esther because she is the wife of the merchant Mordechai Meisl. To appease Rudolf, the rabbi plants a rose bush and a rosemary bush under the stone bridge, in which the souls of Esther and Rudolf are supposed to unite night after night. But with that he brings sin into the Jewish city, which is punished with an epidemic from which the children die. When Rabbi Löw found out about this through the spirits of the deceased children, he tore up the rosemary bush with a heavy heart and threw it into the Vltava. That night the plague ends, the beautiful Esther dies and the emperor wakes up with a scream. The angel Asael visits the rabbi, speaks to him about the power of words and the traces they leave behind in the world, and accuses him of interfering with the divine balance. When the angel asked why people complained with love that would only bring unhappiness into the world, Rabbi Löw reminded the angel of the beginning of the time when angels and daughters of man loved one another. The angel is crying
