ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
The project of the Teatro Coccia in Novara to imagine the theatrical space of the Sordevolo Passion as a scene capable of hosting melodrama also found me not only favorable but enthusiastic; an invitation to throw yourself into a fascinating challenge, because it doesn’t just mean staging an opera in a space that is unique in terms of history and tradition. It means reviving the opera within a community fabric that has made shared and participatory theater a vital focus and which will now become the dramaturgical fulcrum of the production in the new staging of an opera. Bringing on stage a country that makes theater its second soul is an exciting adventure in perfect harmony with the choice of the Teatro Coccia to choose Nabucco by Giuseppe Verdi, an opera by Giuseppe Verdi, as the first opera to inaugurate the “Opera che Passione” project. people addressed to the people, a grandiose choral song, unique in its expressive power and emotional capacity, around which the stories of the individual protagonists, Nabucco, Abigaille, Ismaele and Fenena, intersect.
A large group of inhabitants of Sordevolo will act on the scene as a grandiose “stand-in” for the choir itself. It will now be the Jewish people, now the Assyrian Babylonian people, but above all it will be the people in the broadest sense, representing the oppressed, the last of all time, creating a sort of temporal shift between mythical time and contemporaneity several times during the work.
The Sordevolo arena – imagined with the set designer Matteo Capobianco – will become a sort of large archaeological field built on ancient ruins and dominated by an incandescent heart, a large golden casket wrapped like a work by Christo, recalling the Temple of Solomon, surrounded by degrading scaffolding which will be a sort of emotional bridge with the present time, on which a symbolic figure, dressed in green, will act as hope for a better future
