ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
Composer’s Notes:
“Myosotis” is the Latin name of the forget-me-not plant. In this day and age, in our culture, it is gauche to admit that you need other people. We know on an intellectual level that human beings are helpless when we are alone, that we evolved to rely on each other. When it comes down to it, however, we are uncomfortable with that reality. When we start to feel like someone needs us too much, we pull away. We “forget” each other.
I have been struggling with being “forgotten” for my whole life, and Myosotis is the story of the loneliness and anger of that struggle, and of the subsequent realization that when we choose instead to “remember” each other, we create each other. What I know of you becomes part of who you are. If you believe I can be good, can be loved, you make it true. Alone we are not only nothing, we are nobody. We need each other, and we should not be ashamed of that need. We become ourselves only through knowing others, and if we are lucky, loving them well and truly and being loved in return, cocreating ourselves in unity with one another and with the Good Green Earth.Movements:
