ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
The Shizuoka International Opera Competition is a competition held every three years by Shizuoka Prefecture since 1996, 50 years after his death, in honor of Tamaki Miura, a prima donna associated with Shizuoka Prefecture. The purpose of this competition is not only to discover talented people in the vocal music world, but also to hope for the development of music culture broadly, and to deepen ties both inside and outside the country through international exchange, and to create a “Shizuoka culture” that spreads throughout the world. I am.
The competition is judged at a very high level, with a large number of applications from vocalists from all over the world and top prize winners from other prestigious competitions, and strict judging criteria. In particular, in the second round of qualifying, contestants must choose a role in the opera and perform a designated part of the entire song for approximately 20 minutes before being judged. This is one of the few judging methods in the world, and the highly difficult content tests not only the vocal technique and expressiveness of the contestants, but also their experience, which is why this competition is an “opera” competition rather than a “vocal music” competition.
The first “International Opera Competition in SHIZUOKA” was held in 1996, and was held every three years in 1999 and 2002, and in 2003, its achievements were recognized and it became the first competition in the vocal music field in Asia. The competition became a member of the World Federation of International Music Competitions, and the name of the competition was changed to the Shizuoka International Opera Competition. In 2016, the English name was changed to emphasize that it is held near Mt. Fuji, which is registered as a World Heritage Site. The winners of this competition are active in famous theaters around the world. Held every three years, the 9th edition was scheduled for 2020, but was postponed to 2023 due to the global pandemic.
