ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
The National Symphony Orchestra of the National Institute of Fine Arts and Literature presents a program with the Brandenburg Concerto No. 3 by Johann Sebastian Bach, the dramatic Cantata “Ino” by Georg Philipp Telemann, the Symphony for strings and basso continuo No. 5 from Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s motet Exultate, jubilate, K 165, under the baton of David Stern, guest conductor, and the soloist participation of the soprano Sara Hershkowiiz.
The Brandenburg Concerto No. 3 by Johann Sebastian Bach is one of the most perfect examples of the baroque concerto. Its vitality lies in its inexhaustible melodic invention, its colorful instrumentation and the formidable technical demand that this music represents for its interpreters.
At the age of 84, Georg Philipp Telemann composed his famous dramatic soprano cantata “Ino”, inspired by the goddess protector of sailors in Greek mythology.
From Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, second son of Johann Sebastian Bach, who had Georg Philipp Telemann as godfather, the OSN performs the Symphony for Strings and Bass Continu No. 5 in B minor.
Mozart composed the motet Exultate, jubilate, K 165 in 1773 during his visit to Milan. The work was written for the castrato Venanzio Rauzzini, one of his favorite interpreters after the premiere of his opera Lucio Silla in 1772 in Italy. This festive religious motet by Mozart shows many characteristics of his more operatic concert arias, treating the voice as a virtuoso soloist.
American soprano Sara Hershkowitz is the guest soloist to perform Telemann and Mozart on this program. A member of the Young Singers Project of the Salzburg Festival, Hershkowitz has also collaborated with the Bremen Opera and the Drottningholm Court Theater in Sweden, as well as with the London Philharmonia and the Vienna Radio Orchestra, among others.
Originally from New York, David Stern is the founder and director of Opera Fuoco, a Paris-based opera studio and ensemble of original instruments. He has also been the artistic director of the Israel Opera. As a guest conductor, he has led the Vienna Symphony, as well as the Hong Kong Philharmonic, Shanghai Symphony and the Bavarian Chamber Philharmonic.
