Mozart/Mozart is a German television series directed by Clara Zoë My-Linh von Arnim . The showrunner and head writer was Andreas Gutzeit, who co-wrote the scripts with Swantje Oppermann.

    Plot
Maria Anna Mozart , nicknamed “Nannerl,” lives in the shadow of her brother Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart , even though she is also an exceptional musical talent. When Wolfgang falls from grace and can no longer perform, the family’s financial future is at stake.

To save her brother’s career and family, Maria assumes his identity. She finds herself caught in a web of intrigue, at the center of which is Antonio Salieri , who is in love with her.

    Episode 1: Scandal
After the Archbishop of Salzburg falls asleep during a performance of the Missa brevis in F major , Amadeus angrily strikes a different note and is subsequently accused of blasphemy, declared persona non grata , and dismissed for his behavior. Leopold Mozart then plans to marry Maria Anna to Baron von Oberhausen. The siblings therefore flee to Vienna, hoping that Wolfgang will obtain a position at the court of Joseph II. They find accommodation at the Pension Weber , run by Constanze Weber ‘s mother . Constanze and Amadeus begin a love affair.

Maria Anna offers sheet music to the instrument maker Signore Avenarius, but he isn’t interested. Outside his shop, she happens to meet Antonio Salieri , who buys the music from her for five guilders. Salieri presents the composition to the Emperor as his own work. At the Hofburg Palace , Marie Antoinette from France is visiting her brother Joseph. She engages Amadeus to perform at a birthday concert for him. Before the performance, Maria Anna finds her brother unconscious, a small bottle of laudanum clutched in his hand . Amadeus asks his sister to step in for him. Leopold travels to Vienna to join his children.

    Episode 2: Rival
Following the motto “You want Mozart, we’ll give you Mozart,” Maria Anna performs the 21st Piano Concerto before the court, standing in for her brother. Thanks to the costume and wig, the switch goes unnoticed, and Joseph II and Marie Antoinette are delighted. The emperor offers Amadeus an advance of 1000 guilders if he can present a plan for an opera within two days that will be equally well-received by the people.

When Constanze’s mother learns of her relationship with Amadeus, she throws the couple and her sister out. They find shelter with Constanze’s friend Rosa. Amadeus proposes to Constanze, and she accepts. He wants to be free and travel the country with his group of street musicians. Maria Anna blames her brother for their father’s plan to marry her off to Baron von Oberhausen. While Constanze and Amadeus are getting married, Leopold is searching for his children.

Salieri, fearing for his position at court, offers Maria Anna 1000 guilders if Amadeus leaves Vienna. She refuses the offer. Searching for a suitable libretto for a German-language folk opera, she visits Signore Avenarius, where she finds the text for * The Abduction from the Seraglio* . Amadeus presents Maria Anna’s idea for a German-language opera to the Emperor as his own. However, Salieri had made the same proposal shortly before, having learned of Maria Anna’s plan from Avenarius. Amadeus then challenges Salieri to a duel.

    Episode 3: Fantasy
During the duel between Salieri and Amadeus, Constanze is accidentally shot; Anna Maria stitches up her wound. Amadeus is arrested on the Emperor’s orders. The Emperor proposes an aria competition, with the winner to compose the Volksoper (People’s Opera). Marie Antoinette attempts to seduce Amadeus, but he escapes. Meanwhile, Leopold Mozart manages to locate his children and has Amadeus committed to a rehabilitation clinic. He intends to compose the aria himself, while Anna Maria is tasked with finding a soprano.

At a masked ball hosted by Marie Antoinette, the singer Nancy Storace performs. Anna Maria gains entry to the ball by sending an invitation to Amadeus, where she dances with Salieri. He engages Storace for himself in the aria competition, while Anna Maria is escorted away by guards. Leopold rejects Elenora Maxim, the singer Anna Maria suggests, due to their shared past. Although Elenora hasn’t sung in opera for years, Anna Maria manages to persuade her to compete against Storace. With the audience’s favor, Anna Maria and Elenora Maxim win the aria competition, and Amadeus receives a commission from Joseph II to compose the Volksoper (People’s Opera).

    Episode 4: Fireworks
Marie Antoinette tries to seduce Amadeus again, while Maria Anna narrowly escapes being exposed. After winning the aria competition, Leopold and Anna Maria go to collect the advance promised by the Emperor. He sends Salieri to represent them, who informs them that the money will only be paid out after the dress rehearsal.

At the clinic, Dr. Wagner demands 2,000 guilders of hush money from Leopold to prevent him from revealing that, contrary to press reports, Amadeus, who is undergoing withdrawal treatment at the clinic, did not actually perform in the aria competition. While Wagner keeps Amadeus confined to the clinic, Maria Anna begins composing the Volksoper (People’s Opera). The Emperor urges his sister to return to France. Leopold offers Elenora Maxim the lead role in the new opera. Maxim subsequently assists Maria Anna with the composition.

Marie Antoinette tries to locate Amadeus but only encounters Constanze. After Salieri confesses to Maria Anna that he considers the new Volksoper a masterpiece, she passionately kisses him. However, the musicians initially refuse to play under her direction. She later manages to convince them. With Rosa’s support, Constanze organizes a fireworks display as a diversion, intending to free Amadeus from the clinic using explosives.

    Episode 5: Ghosts

King Louis XVI arrives in Vienna to bring Marie Antoinette back. Determined to take her fate into her own hands, she seduces Amadeus and begs him to come to her court in France. After he rejects her, the queen turns to Salieri and offers him a pact to sabotage his rival once and for all. Amadeus is shocked upon his return to Vienna: he learns that Maria Anna, with the support of Leopold and Constanze, is directing the opera. Feeling betrayed and deceived, he hijacks the rehearsals and rewrites the score, despite his failing health. The rehearsal threatens to end in disaster. To distract her brother, Maria Anna secretly postpones the dress rehearsal, which the emperor is scheduled to attend.
But Amadeus discovers the plan and forces the orchestra to revert to his version, leading to utter disaster. The Emperor cancels the premiere and dismisses the Mozarts from his court. A fierce argument erupts between the siblings. Maria Anna has no choice—she agrees to the marriage arranged by her father. Heartbroken, she flees to Salieri one last time. Finally, they give in to their feelings—until he confesses that he, too, sabotaged the rehearsal. The next day, a devastated Maria Anna leaves Vienna with Leopold. (Text: ARD)

    Episode 6: Light

Alone and filled with remorse, Amadeus rejects the Queen and begs Constanze for forgiveness. He vows to bring Maria Anna back. Marie Antoinette, with no other choice, returns to France. Maria Anna’s fiancé, Baron von Sonnenburg, recognizes her talent at their first meeting and agrees to break off the engagement. After an emotional confrontation, Maria Anna and Amadeus free themselves from Leopold’s control and vow to trust each other again. The Emperor, unaware of Salieri’s intrigues, commissions him to compose the opera. But the Mozarts resist—this time with Maria Anna at their head.
They form an orchestra of street performers to create a genuine folk opera. Meanwhile, Salieri is tormented by guilt for sabotaging his great love. He finds Maria Anna and promises to confess everything if it wins her heart. Moved by his words, she too confesses her grand charade: she has secretly impersonated Amadeus Mozart and misled everyone. Feeling betrayed and used, Salieri leaves her. Fearing all is lost, Maria Anna alerts her brother and the ensemble.
Suddenly, the imperial guard arrives in the middle of the rehearsal to escort them to the court theater. To everyone’s surprise, the emperor announces that Salieri has confessed and reinstates Amadeus’ opera. But this time, it is not Amadeus who enters the stage. Maria Anna steps into the spotlight – without disguise, without masquerade. In a triumphant performance, Maria Anna enchants the entire audience with her folk opera. As the Mozarts take their bows hand in hand, their journey at the imperial court has only just begun. (Text: ARD)
