ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
SYNOPSIS:
00:48 Scene I
Nora and Cathleen are worried about their mother, Maurya, who seems distressed by something she cannot express. The two sisters have received some clothes that might belong to their brother Michael, who has been missing for days. Cathleen doubts they could be his, given the place where they were found, but Nora mentions that they were brought to her by the young priest. Hearing Maurya approaching, the sisters decide to hide the clothes.
07:02 Interlude I
09:10 Scene II
Maurya expresses her deep concern for her son Bartley, who is about to leave for the fair despite the strong storm winds. Nora and Cathleen try to comfort her, but her anguish remains palpable, knowing Bartley is preparing for the journey despite her pleas.
20:23 Scene III
Bartley comes home, determined to head to the trade fair. While he prepares his belongings for the trip, Maurya tries to dissuade him, but he ignores her. The two begin to argue more and more intensely. Tensions rise, and Maurya, in a fit of anger, drives Bartley out of the house. The young man says goodbye to his mother and sisters and sets off for the Galway fair.
17:53 Scene IV
Maurya realizes her mistake and understands that she has sealed Bartley’s fate. The two daughters, Nora and Cathleen, try to reason with their mother. Cathleen notices that Bartley has forgotten food for his journey and convinces Maurya to follow him to bring it, so the two can reconcile.
23:23 Interlude II
25:21 Scene V
The two sisters are left alone and debate whether to check if the clothes found by the priest really belong to Michael. They give in to curiosity and open the package with the clothes, discovering that they do indeed belong to their brother, as they recognize the embroidery made by Nora. The two despair and grieve but try to compose themselves, as Maurya is returning home, and they do not want to tell her about this new loss. They hide the clothes again.
30:50 Scene VI
Maurya returns home in shock, claiming she saw Michael riding behind Bartley. Cathleen tries to tell her it’s impossible since Michael’s body has been found and shows her the evidence. However, their mother seems not to listen and starts recounting how all the men in her family have drowned at sea. The two sisters notice movement on the beach and see a man, Colum, carrying a dripping mass from the waves. He enters the house and announces Bartley’s death. Maurya realizes she has lost both of her sons and despairs, saying that the sea can no longer harm her. Cathleen asks Colum to build a coffin for Bartley, while Maurya resigns herself to her fate. The mother blesses Bartley and expresses her acceptance of destiny.
