Kuzan Maryan Stepanovych ( September 29, 1925 , Isai – April 12, 2005 , Framon ) – French composer and conductor of Ukrainian origin. He is more impressed by the refined, modern world. However, an important place in his artistic worldview is occupied by Ukrainian classical poetry, in particular the poems of Taras Shevchenko. The development of Kuzan as a composer was influenced by Ukrainian folk music and such masters as Edgar Warez , Arnold Schoenberg and Bela Bartok. Creativity is diverse in genres. The author’s compositions, mostly written in modern idioms, include orchestral, incidental and other instrumental music, vocal and film music

“Message”
The oratorio was written in 1992 for mixed choir, soloists ( mezzo-soprano , bass baritone) and double symphony orchestra. Duration one and a half hours. The composer in the work is based on a wide layer of Ukrainian melodies. The idea for the writing arose in April 1987, when Petro Savarin , as president of the SKVU , visited the Ukrainian community in Paris . The work was commissioned by the Alberta Society for the Preservation of Ukrainian Culture ( Edmonton , Canada ).). Ordering the oratorio “Message” from Kuzan, AT3UK hoped to stage it in 1991-92. in Edmonton on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the settlement of Ukrainians in Canada, the famous conductor Grzegorz Nowak planned this performance in March 2001, on the 130th anniversary of Taras Shevchenko’s death, but for various reasons it failed.

The world premiere took place in Edmonton ( Canada ) on June 8, 2002 with the participation of the author. The Edmonton Symphony Orchestra celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2002. He ended the anniversary season on June 8 with the premiere of Shevchenko’s oratorio “Message” by Marian Kuzan and A. Mahler’s symphony. The concert took place at the Winspeare Theater, and the symphony orchestra was conducted by the famous Grzegorz Nowak. The oratorio was performed by the Dnipro Choir conducted by Maria Dytyniak, the Edmonton Men’s Choir conducted by Orest Soltykevych and individual singers and soloists.
