In May 1873, the Italian poet and novelist Alessandro Manzoni, one of the national heroes of the Apennine Peninsula at the time, an active figure in the Italian Risorgimento , died. Exactly one year after his death, Giuseppe Verdi’s Messa da Requiem , one of the most famous musical works in history, premiered . In this dramatic-poetic vision of extinction and new light, Verdi brilliantly combined operatic style with contemplation. He reacted indirectly to scenes from Michelangelo’s frescoes from the Sistine Chapel.
