ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
The renaissance of Baroque music reached its zenith in Mendelssohn’s time, when the Romantic composer and conductor presented Johann Sebastian Bach’s St Matthew Passion in Berlin a century after its original composition. Less well known is that he revived the work again on Palm Sunday 1841 in the Thomaskirche in Leipzig, where Bach once worked as Kapellmeister. This is the version that will now be heard in Hungary for the first time on period instruments, under the baton of György Vashegyi, the country’s leading conductor of period performance. What makes the undertaking even more special is that Mendelssohn’s interpretation of Bach’s work will come to life in a performance by two world-class ensembles, the Purcell Choir and Orfeo Orchestra.
