ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
Johann Sebastian Bach’s Matthew Passion is a harsh journey into suffering, guilt and trials of faith. Already the opening chorus asks us to be horrified by the sacrificial gift given by the innocent, and the closing chorus two hours later mourns the savior laid in the tomb. However, the journey also includes moments of compassion, comfort and hope. The Matthew passion reflects on the central mystery of Christianity passionately but as if in a slowed down tempo, with more emphasis on inner feelings than action. The solo arias in this work are personal reckonings, and the listener cannot avoid facing his own human weaknesses. The choir’s task, on the other hand, is to comment on the events of Good Friday, like a Greek tragedy.
