The caliph Harun al-Raschid cannot sleep and calls for his bodyguard Masrur to cheer him up. Masrur suggests various amusements, but nothing can inspire the caliph, not a walk, not a visit to his wives or a game with his slaves. His mood is getting worse and worse. Finally Masrur is at the end of his ideas and desperately proposes to the caliph that he should cut off his head if that could only comfort him. The caliph is briefly tempted, but then he thinks about it
