  • ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
Born in Sydney in 1936, Marilyn Richardson has been described as ‘without doubt the finest soprano, probably the finest singer in this country’. She studied music in New South Wales, then won a Churchill Fellowship and went to Europe to study with Pierre Bernac in Paris and Conchita Badia in Barcelona. Richardson’s European debut in 1972 was in Basel in the roles of Lulu and Salome. Her wide repertoire has covered medieval to late twentieth-century works. Operatic roles have included all the ladies in LES CONTES D”HOFFMANN, the Marschallin, Leonore, Katya Kabanova, Cleopatra, Donna Anna, Countess Almaviva, Tosca, Aida, Amelia, Desdemona, Eva, Sieglinde, Elsa, and Isolde. Her recital repertoire has been diverse and extensive. She has performed several hundred different works, from the medieval to modern periods, in a cornucopia of languages (including Polish!) and has recorded extensively with many of the world’s leading orchestras. This short film documentary was produced in 1991 and joins her in rehearsal for a recital with the wonderful pianist, David Miller, in the Hunter Valley of New South Wales.
