ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
A special opera performance on the occasion of the 800th anniversary of the establishment of the Dominican Order in Hungary and the 90th anniversary of the birth of Sándor Szokolay at the Margaret Island Open Air Stage.
Based on the medieval Margit legend, Margit, the Sacrifice Dedicated to the Homeland combines the two main directions of the author’s works from the 90s on stage; its theme is both sacred and Hungarian. The title character of the mystery opera is Szent Margit from Árpád-házi, whose father IV. Béla, offered to God if he would save his country from the Tatars. The protagonist voluntarily undertakes the mission assigned to him before his birth. In the opera, we can follow the stages of the journey during which the holy sacrifice of the Dominican nun Margit is fulfilled.
