ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
Manuel Fernández Caballero ( Murcia , March 14, 1835 – Madrid , February 26, 1906) was a Spanish composer of zarzuelas of the 19th century , and today his best-known work is Gigantes y cabezudos (Giants and Bigheads) ( 1898 ).
He can be considered one of the fathers of the young genre chico for his works. The success of Los bandos de villafrita (1884) consolidated his career, being the most represented work in Spain without being removed from the billboard during the entire century. Such was its success that he had to make a sequel: Las grandes figuras (1885).
His works in general eloquently display a great mastery of orchestration and an elegant style. The sainete El duo de La africana is a delightful piece, and his famous jota No cantes más La africana remains a magnificent example of the zarzuela duo. In addition to zarzuelas, Fernández Caballero composed secular and religious music.
