ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
The nouveau riche, however, culturally ignorant Mr. Cauliflower invites the cream of Paris society to a private party and a “musical soiree” (in his vulgarly decorated bourgeois parlor) to celebrate three Italian opera singers: the soprano Henriette Sontag, tenor Giovanni Battista Rubini, and baritone Antonio Tamburini. However, at the last minute the three feel unwell.
Meanwhile, Cauliflower’s daughter Ernestina has been secretly meeting a young bassoonist, songwriter and singer named Chrysodule Babylas. When she asks her father to invite the boy to the soiree, Cauliflower refuses, saying that a poor musician was not a worthy suitor for her. So, Ernestina saves the day by playing Sontag, and having Babylas play Rubini, in addition to convincing her father to disguise himself as Tamburini (after all, the couple explains that baritones don’t need to talk much, just a few small vocalizations, however Cabbage- flowery has to try to stay in tune).
Despite Petermann, Cauliflower’s lazy and incompetent flamenco employee, the trick works. Guests are impressed by the great “Italian” singers (who speak with an Italian accent and sing) and Cauliflower rewards Babylas with her daughter’s hand (especially since Babylas demanded it, in addition to a dowry of 50,000 francs, in order to keep quiet about fraud).
