ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
The Last Day of Pompeii is a melodrama in two acts by Giovanni Pacini , with a libretto by Andrea Leone Tottola . The opera premiered to great success at the Teatro San Carlo in Naples on 17 November 1825 , with Adelaide Tosi , Giovanni David , Luigi Lablache and Michele Benedetti (bass)
Plot
The story takes place in Pompeii , in 79 AD, a few hours before the eruption of Vesuvius .Act I
Sallust has been elected first magistrate of Pompeii. In the atrium of his house, he receives congratulations from everyone, including Appius Diomedes, the tribune , who, however, is in love with Ottavia, Sallust’s wife, and is jealous of their happiness. Appius later approaches Ottavia and declares his love, but Ottavia brutally rejects him. The tribune then plots revenge, with the complicity of Pubblius, the baths’ guardian. They decide to disguise Pubblius’s young son, Clodius, in women’s clothing and, with the help of Faustus, Sallust’s freedman , to infiltrate him among Ottavia’s maids. Meanwhile, the celebration of Sallust’s elevation to the magistracy is underway, beginning at the Temple of Jupiter . The new magistrate vows to always uphold Roman law. As the procession heads to the amphitheater , Pubblius pretends to discover Clodius among the maids. The young man claims that he was seduced by Octavia. Sallust is incredulous, but, based on what he has just sworn, he is forced to try his wife for adultery.Act II
During the trial, in the basilica of Pompeii , Octavia declares her innocence. Sallust is still shocked and reluctant to condemn his wife. However, just at that moment, rumblings are heard coming from Vesuvius. The augurs interpret this as the gods’ disapproval of Sallust’s hesitation in condemning an adulteress. Octavia is then condemned to be walled up alive. As the sentence is about to be carried out, the volcano erupts in a tremendous explosion, and Sallust interprets the event as a sign that a horrible injustice is about to be committed. Frightened, Publius, believing that his own wickedness is the cause of the explosions, exposes his and Appius’s plots. The two men are walled up alive instead of Octavia, while fiery lapilli and debris rain down from the sky. Menenius, son of Sallust and Octavia, however, manages to save his parents with a chariot.(Visited 84 times, 1 visits today)
