ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
Early forced marriage in some Arab countries is the subject of an opera project by Weimar music students. The two-act chamber opera “Lucie” was composed by student Giordano Bruno do Nascimento, who also wrote the libretto. They will present the piece for the first time in a semi-staged performance on Saturday and the following Monday.
“The real-life model who inspired the opera was named Rawan, for example, and was only eight years old. She died on her wedding night,” the composer writes, and continues. “Often, children are sold to their husbands out of financial necessity. In the opera, the recently deceased girl encounters a ghost who informs her of her death and calls for an appeal to those responsible. The ghost’s name is Lucie. She, too, has a real-life counterpart.”
