ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
Los gavilanes is a zarzuela in three acts and five scenes in prose, with music by Jacinto Guerrero and libretto by José Ramos Martín . It premiered on December 7, 1923 at the Teatro de la Zarzuela in Madrid .
The action takes place in a village in Provence (but it could just as well be in Spain) in the year 1845.
Act 1
Juan, an Indian who has made a fortune in Peru, returns to his town causing a great commotion, since everyone believed him dead.
Juan’s brother, sister-in-law and nieces receive expensive gifts and jewels, which they flaunt. Now the mayor of the town is Clariván, an old rival of Juan’s, but who wants to make it seem like he is a great friend of his so that he pays for the works that the town needs. Juan confesses to a few people that he saw no reason to return when he found out that Adriana, his great love, had married another man. Now Adriana is a widow, poor and with a young daughter, Rosaura.
Act 2
Juan announces that he wants to marry Rosaura, the daughter of his former love, which causes a scandal. The mayor and the gendarme think he is a dirty old man.
Act 3
Juan has paid off all of Rosaura’s family’s debts, so that she is indebted to him. The mayor and the gendarme begin to call him “the hawk” with contempt, because he has hunted a pigeon. Rosaura is in love with a boy her age and they think of running away, they are surprised by Juan, who realizes how miserable he has been and leaves the young couple alone, earning the respect of the entire town.
