ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
The struggle of the sun to prevail over the night symbolised the triumph of natural order in the cosmos, but also in the social organisation of the time. A message that, in political terms, could be interpreted as the light that Philip V of Bourbon would bring to the Archduke Charles of Austria in the War of Succession that was then being fought in Spain. This co-production of Los elemento by Antonio de Literes (1673-1747) represents the first foray of the Chamber Musical Theatre format into the sumptuous world of Spanish musical baroque. With an exclusively female cast and a small orchestra, this opera was composed in Madrid to celebrate the birthday of the Duchess of Medina de las Torres. The premiere took place in the privacy of her palace around 1705.
