  • ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE

Los claveles is a zarzuela , a type of short, farcical opera , in one act divided into three scenes, with a libretto by Luis Fernandez de Sevilla and Anselmo C. Carreño , and music by José Serrano . It premiered to great acclaim at the Teatro Fontalba in Madrid on April 6, 1929. It is considered one of José Serrano’s last works, before La dolorosa , and demonstrates his skill as a composer.

The script follows the guidelines of the classic farce, but brought to the present day, with good skill and quality, by the experienced authors Anselmo C. Carreño and Luis Fernández de Sevilla, who had established themselves as one of the most solid pairs of librettists in the genre.

As for the music, he knows how to take advantage of the situations in the libretto to demonstrate his great melodic talent, in anthological numbers such as the romance “damn it” or “women”, which are still performed in numerous recitals with great success.

    Synopsis

The action takes place in Madrid on the date of the premiere (1929)

    First Panel
In a perfume factory called “Los Claveles,” the female workers cheerfully sing traditional songs until lunchtime is called. Rosa, a worker known for her seductive nature and flirtatious behavior, feels slighted by the lack of attention from the factory cashier, Don Fernando.

Meanwhile, Jacinta is in love with Goro, a scatterbrained accounting apprentice who’s always mixing up sums of money. Her mother, Remedios, is constantly urging him to marry Jacinta. But her husband, Evaristo, is being blackmailed by Don Bienvenido, Jacinta’s uncle, a rather shameless man, because Don Evaristo had an affair with his sister, Jacinta being his daughter. Don Bienvenido tries to seduce Remedios into leaving her husband.

At the start of the school day, Rosa takes the opportunity to ridicule Fernando, as a young lady appears looking for him and leaves with him, leaving Rosa filled with anger and shame at the laughter of her classmates.

    Second Panel
On a street, Rosa waits impatiently for Fernando to arrive so she can laugh at him. Meanwhile, Remedios is worried about Goro, who is growing increasingly sad and refuses to see Jacinta, who is also heartbroken. She tries to get the whole truth out of Bienvenido, who offers a convenient solution to the young couple’s love life if she leaves Evaristo and goes with him.

Fernando appears accompanied by the young lady, leaving Rosa standing there empty-handed. Finally, Remedios confronts Goro and Jacinta, telling him that Jacinta cannot be his sister, since he is not actually Evaristo’s son, but someone else’s, allowing the couple to happily reconcile.

    Third Table
On a walk near the church of San Antonio de la Florida, Doña Remedios arrives with Goro and Jacinta to prepare an afternoon snack. Fernando encounters Doña Remedios and her family, and they all comment on the couple’s happiness and their disdain for Rosa, who is seething with anger.

Rosa arrives and they talk about their relationship. Fernando reveals that he’s actually married, and Rosa leaves, indignant. Later, Señor Bienvenido appears with Don Evaristo, who intends to separate the couple, but Señora Remedios exposes the truth and scares Bienvenido away, celebrating the couple’s happiness. Meanwhile, Fernando reunites with Rosa and confesses his affection for her, revealing that it was all a lie and that he did it to punish her. He explains that he isn’t married and that, in time, they will become a good couple.
