  This opera is a parody of the opera as it existed at the time of L’Opera Seria. The shortcomings of all those are resolved by hilarious events into the opera. During the writing, the rehearsal and the performance of the opera, there is a constant dispute; when writing, the lyricist and the theater director fly into each other’s hair, when rehearsing, the singers together with their mothers make each other’s miserable lives and while performing the opera, the singers simply fight behind the scenes. Central to this opera is the rehearsal of a serious opera that will be performed the same night. However, the problems are great: the star ten hard seems to be capable of read, the singers are exclusively interested in their costumes and the number of arias they want to sing, and composer and librettist each fight other when changes need to be made. In the last company we see how the opera flops and how the performers, under the message of the audience, hurriedly leave the theater.

  The librettist Rainieri de ‘Calzabighi, who also wrote the text for Glucks Orfeo and Euridice, has given the figures ironic names in his drama and brought them to life in a textbook in which the stupidity of the singers, the envy of librettists and composers and numerous character traits with a lot of humor are painted. The challenge for 2014 is to combine the completely separate musical languages and worlds of the opera buffa (with its almost painfully portrayed preciseal of the characters and its varied ensembles) and the opera seria (with its grotesque styling) in one opera. Gassmann’s L’Opera Seria is an opera with great music that can also be laughed at.
