ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
Quote from Bayerische Staatsoper:
The Hungarian film and theater director Kornél Mundruczó, whose productions are shown at the world’s most important festivals and stages, has also been working in the field of opera for several years. His production of The Makropulos Case (2016) at the Vlaamse Opera was nominated for the International Opera Awards, last year he premiered Peter Eötvös’ opera Sleepless at the Berlin Staatsoper Unter den Linden. He is also the founder and director of the independent theater company Proton Theater. With his team (including stage designer Monika Pormale and costume designer Ania Axer) he is now making his debut at the Bavarian State Opera. For the first time in an opera production at this house, the musical director is the conductor François-Xavier Roth, who is known for historically informed performance practice as well as for unusual program combinations and is regularly invited by top orchestras. Klaus Florian Vogt sings the title role, and Johanni van Oostrum will sing Elsa.
FOR STAGING
A little boy has disappeared, the heir to the throne of an ancient kingdom. The sister is accused of his death. Instead of defending herself, she calls upon a dream figure to stand by her. And her knight, he does come, wins her cause and her heart. She should never ask who he actually is. Elsa and Lohengrin could now be a happy ruling couple. But the ban on asking questions stands in the way of the thirst for knowledge, the desire to know resists the romantic miracle, enlightenment is not compatible with blind faith. The doubts that Elsa’s adversaries inspire in her – Ortrud, loyal to the old gods, and Telramund, who has lost his honor – are inherent in every human being. In Wagner’s music, both the seductive and the risky find expression in Lohengrin’s desire for love for himself. The new production by Kornél Mundruczó investigates the ambivalent potential that lies in the design of a person who is superior to the normal and endowed with unearthly powers. For him, Lohengrin is “the most provocative inhuman figure in the entire opera cosmos”. The action takes place in a post-human world where a group of fearful and questioning survivors hope for redemption.
