A symphonic-choreographic opera in two acts (Prologue and Opera) for four characters, libretto by Sebastiano Baldini, revised by C. A. Lonati, composed in 1674 in Rome for the Colonna family, based on the love story of Rinaldo and Armida from Torquato Tasso’s “Jerusalem Delivered.”

In the PROLOGUE, Capriccio and Costanza, wearing a mirror-mask, appear and confront each other (he) to free Rinaldo from “inconvenient virtue,” and (she) to keep him a warrior. The stage is set and fixed, and is lit by a basic set.
In the OPERA, the stage is illuminated by segments of the SUN: the silhouettes of the trees, the objects (a hedgehog-seat, a bed-bed), a pool of water, and the SUN descending from the ceiling onto the magical garden.
In PART I, Armida appears, searching for Rinaldo, lost in the garden. Summoned by enchanted gestures, he enters as if drawn, barely aware. Armida sets the scene of seduction, the two lovers reflecting in the water. The dismayed voices of the knights Ubaldo and Carlo can be heard from the trees. A. and R. flirt. As Armida exits, restless, Rinaldo falls asleep. The stage darkens, the Orchestra lights up.
INTERMEZZO. Lights as at the beginning. Capriccio, Costanza, and Armida pass by.
In PART II, Ubaldo and Carlo emerge from the trees and approach Rinaldo, who lies asleep, his shield abandoned. At the trumpet
(on the words “he calls you to revenge”), the SUN of enchantment goes out.
The shield becomes a mirror for Rinaldo, in which he sees his deformity.
At the song “Volando al naviglio si corra,” the two warriors raise their swords and
    the trees vanish.
Armida enters. During the aria, the sails rise, a white light rises.
When he invokes the furies, with a glowing hand, even the sails turn red, the sun is lower. Everything goes dark, except Armida and the now red sails. The sun sets.
Ubaldo and Carlo enter with music stands.
All the characters, including Capriccio and Costanza, slowly move to the front of the stage. The light turns golden.
