ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
From legend to opera
As for the story, Llacolén is based on a Mapuche legend that narrates the conflict of Llacolén, daughter of the warrior Galvarino. She falls in love with a Spanish captain, a bond that clashes with the destiny her father had forged when he betrothed her to the lonko Millantú. The plot, which takes place in the Nahuelbuta mountain range , addresses themes such as forbidden love, betrayal, and war. It is inspired by literary texts such as La Araucana and the writings of Oreste Plath.
Regarding the musical style and staging, Toro stated that “this legend works very well for the traditional lyrical format of the operatic show. This story is a perfect opera; we had to give it its format and sound, and well, we’ll see the result in a few days .” He also highlighted the cultural significance of the work, which incorporates performances in both Spanish and Mapudungun, seeking to give a profound highlight to Mapuche culture and tradition through music and drama.
The opera thus joins a small but significant number of Chilean opera productions and is shaping up to be an important contribution to the dissemination of the national cultural heritage in far-reaching artistic formats. Toro hopes the work will “stir up emotions and passions” in the audience, describing it as a passionate story with intense characters and powerful dramatic situations.
