Giacomo Puccini was born just before the unification of Italy, into a dynasty of church musicians in the city of Lucca. He came of age as Giuseppe Verdi’s career was winding down, and lived long enough to own motor cars, use the telephone, and supply the recording industry with its earliest hits. But before the fame of La Bohème and Tosca, who was the young Giacomo? In this season premiere of Lives in Song, host Flora Willson is joined by opera scholar Ditlev Rindom to explore the origins of this most famous of opera composers. They discuss the tragedy that disrupted his family’s musical lineage, his “punk” influences from the avant-garde Scapigliatura movement, and the crisis of confidence in Italian opera that set the stage for his rise. In this episode, you’ll discover: The Dynasty: How five generations of Puccini musicians in Lucca paved the way for Giacomo. The Crisis: Why the Italian opera world was anxious about finding a successor to Verdi. The Influences: How French opera, Wagner, and the “dishevelled” Scapigliatura movement shaped Puccini’s modern sound. The Music: Excerpts from Verdi’s Simon Bocanegra and Boito’s Mefistofele.
