Summary
Ali, a wealthy Turkish merchant based in Smyrna, decides to present an opera in his hometown. He travels to Venice to recruit artists and craftsmen to participate in his project. His arrival in Venice doesn’t go unnoticed. Between crooked impresarios and capricious divas, Ali’s troubles are not over.
Creation
The Impresario of Smyrna was first performed in Venice on December 26, 1759, and ran for nine performances. This original version was written in verse. Goldoni later transcribed his play into prose.
Rediscovery
Once forgotten, the play was rediscovered by Luchino Visconti in the 1950s. His production of The Impresario of Smyrna was notably presented in Paris, at the Théâtre des Nations, in 1957.
