ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
The Bedouin poetess laments her brother’s death in a duel; yet, this is not a sorrowful dirge, but rather a story of her brother’s heroic life. Using an ancient Arabic idiom rich in imagery drawn from desert life (in the pre-Islamic era), she wisely declares—and this serves as the work’s spiritual motto—that time is the cruelest force of all. This statement recurs within a large rondo structure, acting as a sort of “refrain” that marks the musical motifs.
