Curt Faudon’s third film about the Vienna Boys’ Choir is a homage in twenty-one lavishly illustrated songs: Maria, mother of God, wise virgin, beautiful as the moon and chosen as the sun is celebrated with music from five centuries. The film was shot in Liguria, in India , Thailand and Austria, in blooming poppy fields in the Waldviertel, in the ice cave near Werfen, on location in Vienna and in the studio. Speaker is Christian Brückner.
Mary is worshiped in different cultures and religions and in different forms. She appears on lions or crescent moons, in the manger and by the cross; in Judaism, Christianity and Islam; it has relatives in Hinduism and ancestors in antiquity.

The music ranges from Gregorian “Salve Regina” to motets to gospels and Raoul Gehringer’s 2013 composed “Tod und Liebe”, two verses from Solomon’s Song of Songs. Josquin Desprez’ Virgo prudentissima was filmed in the ancient cities of Liguria; the motet of his pupil Jean L’Héritier, Nigra sum in the rock churches in Lalibela, Ethiopia. “A rose has sprung” sing the boys in the Eisriesenwelt near Werfen. Faudon’s vision of “A la xácara xacarilla” associates Aztec sun masks with Maria: de Padilla had emigrated to Mexico from Spain, and his vision of Maria includes both. In the Indian Bhajan “Namo, Namo, Maria” the soloist is accompanied by a dancer; the devotional yodel leads through snow-covered alpine landscapes. Finally, two children sing “Still, still, still” in the small wooden Marienkapelle of Schüsserlbrunn. As a bonus – different on the CD accompanying the film – two English Christmas carols can be heard, Mary Laid Her Child and “Tomorrow Shall Be My Dancing Day”.
