ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
The Soldier’s Tale by Igor Stravinsky is an example of a synthetic theatrical and musical work in the chamber genre. Seven instrumentalists, reciters and dancers, whose presence Stravinsky himself considered optional, should be on one small stage in constant interaction, while each strictly within the framework of his own art form.
Musically, the Soldier’s Tale is halfway between the Russian style of Igor Stravinsky’s three grand ballets (The Firebird, Petrushka, and The Rite of Spring) and his neoclassical masterpieces of the 1920s. In parallel with The Story of a Soldier, Stravinsky studied The Wedding, and the folkloric intonations of this great ballet are heard not only in the violin solos of the Soldier – they permeate the entire score. Meanwhile, the Russian plot-collage of fairy tales about the soldier and the devil from the collection of A. N. Afanasyev served as the basis for a completely international musical collage. Stravinsky ironically nods now at American ragtime, now at the French waltz, parodies now the Spanish paso doble, now conditionally Bach’s chorale,
