  • ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE

Recorded at the Vivoin Festival, this concert builds upon the research for the documentary series “Les Barockeuses” about Italian women composers of the 17th and 18th centuries. The focus is on works by Maddalena Casulana (the first woman to publish a collection of madrigals), Barbara Strozzi (a leading figure of the “seconda pratica”), and Antonia Bembo (who moved from Venice to Paris and was patronized by Louis XIV).

As an artistic hotspot, Venice has produced or attracted a wealth of exceptional women composers. Some, like Elisabeth Jacquet de la Guerre and Anna Bon, found their inspiration there, while others published their works or celebrated stage successes in the Serenissima. This concert takes the audience on a musical journey from Italy to France, from sacred to secular music, and from contrapuntal rigor to expressive freedom.
